Compton Cookout: The Starting Five vs. Bench   1 comment

The original players of the “Compton Cookout” event were purported as follows:

  • Individual students who are members of certain fraternities; they organized the party
  • The slothful UCSD administration led by the emails of V.C. Rue and Chancellor Fox
  • The coalition of the Black Student Union, other African American students, and their outspoken supporters
  • The Media including school-based and professional news outlets as a conveyer of information
  • and
  • The student body as a whole as a type of live audience and informal jury.

These are the starting five, not all of whom are still actively playing as much as others. Bench players who have jumped into the fray, ones I will not designate as having a role in initiating the saga or as first responders, but taking on major roles after the theatre was set include:

  • The Koala– controversial student humor newspaper, starring their vile cast of characters and use of Student Run TV
  • Associated Student President Utsav Gupta, who seemed not to have a small and/or largely ignored immediate response to the controversy. He is now most widely known for freezing funding for 33 student media outlets, perceived as a response to the response the Koala aired on SRTV
  • Someone called “Jiggaboo Jones” who has since claimed that the “Compton Cookout” was his idea and a promotional party for his upcoming DVD

These three bench players have managed to become quite the sideshow to the main event on campus, and if any of the starting five have subbed out, it’s been the original party planners. The “Jiggaboo Jones” character tried to vindicate them by saying it was his DVD release party, but doesn’t explain why the Facebook invitation read: “In honor of black history month”, instead of “In honor of Jiggaboo Jones’ new DVD. In fact he had absolutely no mention in the Facebook invitation and he’s an articulate, engaging speaker who probably wouldn’t have to lift from Urban Dictionary to describe the party theme. His YouTube version of the story is widely dismissed. No one is quite sure what his motivation is, probably just the DVD promoting he didn’t actually do at the “Compton Cookout”, but he is not to be believed.

Gupta is unbelievable for another reason. He has frozen funds for AS media outlets, and this leaves only the self-funded Guardian, and most probably the scrappy Koala as the present media outlets. He claims that he is not restricting free speech, but rather ordering a freeze while procedural technicalities are straitened out. Under the law, he cannot shut down any media based on content, so he tries to defend himself by freezing funding for all media based on the content one one source, and pulling a time place and manner switcheroo. Nobody is buying it and he looks like a complete ass, unprepared and unable to deal with the situation in a close to admirable fashion. Any of the supporters he hasn’t isolated will now be ashamed to back up his newfound President Bush-like popularity.

The Koala gets examined last of the three bench players because they’re lying the least and are not behaving any differently than would be expected. Plenty of students have mentioned, it’s the Koala, this is what they do, they try to piss people off. Nobody is surprised by their behavior, and Gupta’s response is gold to them, which he has to now realize and regret. The Koala did exactly what they could be expected to do, and it was vile, opportunistic, and inciteful. It’s also no different from the free speech battles they’ve been winning since the age of the dinosaurs.

With the UCSD “Teach-In” occurring this afternoon, there may very well be another shift in focus to new or old players. I expect the Black Student Union, which has shown solidarity and strength, to take back the focus from the sideshows.

  1. You real can’t take these uneducated UCSD white trailer trash anywhere. This is what happens when more than one of these guys puts their minds together.

Oh, where exactly was a speech going on? Thats right, no where, but keep plucking that chicken.

Or as Carri said “It’s a plot by the fundamentalist rightwing party of tyranny called Republicans. They foment hate, they sneer, they make excuses for their behavior and blame everyone else. They advocate the supremacy of their America – a lily-white America. They are scared and frightened becuase (gasp) a black man has been elected to the White House. They are losing conrol and like cornered animals, they are lashing out. This is the national leadership from whom these studants take their cues.”
