Quick Note On The Funding Freeze   Leave a comment

As many students know, AS President Utsav Gupta, one of the bench players I mentioned, has made headlines by ordering an executive spending freeze for all AS-funded media outlets. That means any of these organizations that rely on AS money to publish cannot publish, by the decision of one man who need not consult anyone but the ruler he sees in the mirror. Of course, he’s not saying their free speech is denied, and that if they can fund themselves, they can publish- a deliberate and transparent dodging of the Constitution.

Gupta’s freeze is widely regarded as having been in response to the Koala SRTV incident, and because he’s not allowed to legally single out one group, he’s freezing funding for all of them. That doesn’t really make it any more legal, since he can’t seem to adequately lie about this not being an issue of content. So yes, Gupta’s freeze is illegal censorship. He’s really become a sideshow in all of the “Compton Cookout” fallout, and I can’t see him winning this battle. Therefore I wish him the best of luck, and the best of media exposure, because nobody at this school will be on his side.
