BSU to Administration: “Bullshit Ass Document!”   2 comments

BSU leaders make the strong declaration to hundreds of gathered students. The BSU says the document didn’t tell them anything they didn’t already know, had no specific implementation plans, and showed that the administration was stupider than they thought. The good news is that the BSU will be involved in the planning and implementation of their demands.

“Bullshit ass document!” Fnann Keflezighi declares.

The demonstrators hung around patiently in the administration complex, waiting for the promised response. Chants and rallies were peppered into the mellow afternoon, and then speakers and a mic were set up in the meeting room courtyard. Several speakers took turns encouraging the movement to the hundreds gathered and more chants and applause ensued. The speakers were wide ranging, and included several black Ph.Ds who graduated decades ago and were returning to offer support to the students.

The speakers’ messages all stayed within the theme of solidarity and institutional change, but varied amongst themselves. Professor Wilkins’ seldom known history lesson of Blacks and Mexicans in America was stirring, very intriguing. He attracted applause when he declared that he didn’t live in America and thought it criminal that America’s relatively small slice of the world population is such a huge drain of the world’s resources. Professor Evans spoke of the UC’s intention to privatize the university and “drain the color” out of it, caring only for the wealthy elite. Controversial messages, both of them, and met with mixed but mostly positive response.

Unequivocally positive messages praising the rainbow coalition, the resonant expression of voices, and the determination for change shown by the group. Alumni noted that the gathered students were fighting the same battle they themselves fought from the sixties to the eighties, and were proud to return and see the good fight still being fought. The point that racism still exists and is still embedded in society was made clear, and even more clear was the resolve to change that. Lots went on while the demonstrators were awaiting the administration’s response.

The administration was quite elusive all day, save for Chancellor Fox’s two addresses, but when the gathered students wanted to be addressed, they were only told about the “bullshit ass document”, which we can safely assume did not meet the expectations of the BSU. More work is definitely left to be done, with another rally set for Monday morning, 10AM.

On a half-night’s notice, the BSU was able to put together 400 strong all day, so with the whole entire weekend to plan another rally, as well as think over their strategy, Monday can be expected to be bigger than today. As Professor Evans affirmed, “this week we were moved, next week we will not be removed.” I’ll presume that prediction rings true. The demonstrators showed a lot of resolve staying from about 8Am to almost 6PM, and they weren’t close to being restless or weary by the end of it. Monday will be another long day, perhaps the administration will make a direct address soon. Surely they need to say something before another incident occurs.
