UCSD’s Welcome Week Block Party Bait and Switch   3 comments

Have you seen the UCSD Welcome Week website? It looks good. The banner’s sharp, the color scheme is spunky, and the layout breathes a casual elegance. Whoever put it together did a nice job– I’m sure the targeted freshmen will be entranced. I’ve provided a snapshot below.

And I’ve outlined in red the Welcome Week event that most caught my interest.

The UCSD Block Party. That sounds like fun. The definition of a block party is something along the lines of “an outdoor public party put on by the residents of a city block or neighborhood.” Maybe there’s barbecue and lawn games at the Marshall cul de sac or something. So I clicked the box and it showed me this:

And I’ve outlined in red what troubles me most.

First of all, whatever this event is, it went from being called “UCSD Block Party” on the main website to “Cross-Cultural Center’s Block Party” with the click of a button. I’m not sure that they’re one in the same. Secondly, the CCC is a loft in Price Center East, so how is that a block party? A block party is when you close of a residential block and have festivities in the street.

But wait, there’s more.

The event description explains that “social justice oriented student organizations” et al. are hosting the event. What does a UCSD-sponsored Welcome Week event aimed at freshmen have to do with social justice? And what is that anyways?

Wikipedia explains that “Social justice is based on the concepts of human rights and equality and involves a greater degree of economic egalitarianism through progressive taxationincome redistribution, or even property redistribution.” How’s that for indoctrinating freshmen before classes even start? The CCC has every right to have their social justice party and advertise it to new students on UCSD’s .edu website, but I wouldn’t expect them to hide behind a box so intriguingly mislabeled “UCSD Block Party.”

Looks like Glenn Beck didn’t quite get it right, once again.

And I’ve outlined in red a correction.
